The Calm are a gigantic race, reaching up to 70m in length. They resemble long two-ended worms. Their dark Hyde is designed to absorb light as well as resist the dangers of space. At each end, as well as a central section clusters of appendages sprout from their body. These curious fixtures are the most interesting physical aspect of the Calm. Each cluster consists of four armatures; each with two elbow joints and sprouting four articulate ‘hands’. Each ‘hand’ has another four functional appendages that are coated in prehensile cilia. This complex structure grants the Calm amazing strength as well as the finest dexterity.
The majority of Calm reside in the asteroid fields of Teil Mekar. The species has not communicated with another race. Whenever one travels to a station in the Rimworlds the facility is plunged into a sedated state. This effect has been known to delay or resolve heated conflicts, replacing general aggression with a subdued fascination.
(probably does AOE motivational damage on a starship combat scale)
While Calm visit orbital and deep-space facilities they maintain and renovate space-bourn technologies (ie. Starships, orbital stations, probes, etc.). Thanks to an apparent mechanical empathy major and minor scale repairs and adjustments are completed with little or no resource consumption. When they do require resources they scavenge from local jettison or localized mineral deposits. Kanic will travel great distances just to observe these ‘gentle giants’ work with technology, hoping to glean insight and improve their own work. Rumor talks of a religious backdrop to Kanic ‘pilgrimages’ to observe Calm in the Rimworlds. No Kanic has ever entered Teil Mekar, however their old rivals the Leven have sent several expeditions to the asteroid cluster, none of which have ever returned.
Calm avoid Leven spacecraft as a general rule. While a connection is unknown, Calm leave systems when a Leven spacecraft enters the vicinity. It is a popular belief among the Kanic that the living spacecraft somehow offend the Calm.
FOOTNOTE: On four known occasions sense the fall of The Sphere the Calm have made star craft and left them at existing ports. Two of these ships have been annexed and made into living quarters for the ports they had been created in. One was towed into a low degrading orbit of R-35 where it eventually fell into one of the planets oceans. The final Calm ship was purchased by a Kanic named Tonner Ki’rit. Tonner spent twenty years learning the ship’s form and function. The ship was roughly the size of Von Battle cruiser and conventionally unman able without a full crew. Tonner Ki’rit single-handedly pulled the ship, which he named ‘Future’, out of port. Future has no known defenses and has not, to date, engaged another ship in combat. Tonner’s tactics are stealth and evasion rather than upright conflict. Tonner has not attempted to communicate, nor leave the Future since his initial departure. Future has been seen all over known space within recent years.
